My husband and I are vegans. We make our own Tempeh and (of course) Tempeh bacon. Our secret for getting that smoky flavor is the addition of Liquid Smoke to our brine marinade, which follows:

Water - 1 pint
Salt - 1 teaspoon
Garlic Powder - 1 teaspoon
Liquid Smoke - 1 Tablespoon


I love me some tempeh- we also sometimes use the VWAV recipe, but this recipe is my absolute favoritest: http://tiny.cc/AvSA9 . Baking it for an hour makes the tempeh taste divine, but I've also found that you can use the same marinade and just pan fry it in a skillet. Mmm-mmm!
